Quick answer: The newest company holiday party survey we could verify, Challenger, Gray & Christmas’s December 2024 edition, found 64 percent of companies planned a holiday celebration, the same as 2023, while 17 percent planned to cut party spending, up from 8 percent. Forecasts for 2027 show meetings spending rising, but they survey event professionals, not employers.

Last updated: November 5, 2026. Next update: when Challenger, Gray & Christmas releases its next holiday party survey (its last three editions came out on December 2, 2022, December 13, 2023 and December 10, 2024) or Northstar/Cvent publishes its next PULSE edition, whichever comes first.

Planners are being squeezed from two sides. Employers in Challenger’s 2024 survey were cutting party budgets, and 70 percent of planners on the undated Northstar/Cvent planner pulse page say food and beverage costs are higher than expected. When catering eats more of a smaller budget, there is less left for the part of the night where colleagues actually interact instead of watching from their tables.

Your budget approver will also ask how current each number is. If you present a 2024 survey as this year’s data, the whole proposal looks weaker. This tracker lists every figure with its edition date, its sample and the question it answers.

What the Latest Holiday Party Survey Changed

The December 10, 2024 Challenger edition is still the newest one we could verify. It shows companies kept celebrating while budgets shrank. The 2024 celebration rate held level with 2023, and the share planning spending cuts more than doubled, from 8 percent in 2023 to 17 percent in 2024.

The same 2024 release tracks a few smaller shifts. Virtual celebrations rose to 4.5 percent in 2024 from 3.9 percent in 2023, and companies that never hold a holiday party fell to 6 percent from 8 percent. Another 2 percent skipped the 2024 celebration because of economic pressure.

Check the labels before you reuse these numbers. The 2024 release counts companies planning a holiday celebration, while the 2023 release reported a separate in-person figure of 64.4 percent. Keep each label and its year next to the percentage, even when your proposal calls it a “company holiday party.”

Each result supports a different budget conversation. Steady celebration rates make the case for keeping the occasion on the calendar. A jump in spending cuts makes the case for reviewing scope, and neither number tells you what your employees want from the night.

Holiday Party Statistics by Survey and Year

The tracker below keeps holiday-specific employer surveys apart from broader meetings forecasts. Historical figures stay with the edition that reported them, so no older number reads as new data.

The American Express Global Business Travel 2027 forecast, published October 13, 2026, found 91 percent of meetings professionals expect spending to rise in 2027. Attendees want more personalized experiences (35 percent), more social activities and networking (31 percent) and more hands-on, interactive sessions (31 percent).

For your plan, that raises one practical question: how will people connect during the event? The forecast does not tell you what your own employees want from a workplace holiday party. Use it as direction, then check it against your group. For the dates that shape next year’s planning, see our 2027 corporate event calendar.

Bigger budgets are arriving with bigger bills. The Northstar/Cvent PULSE recap dated February 4, 2026 found 64 percent of planners expect 2026 budgets to rise 5 to 14 percent, and 58 percent expect costs to climb by about the same. A higher budget does not automatically buy a bigger program.

The newer Northstar/Cvent planner pulse page adds two figures. Thirty-four percent of planners expect to produce more meetings in 2027, and 70 percent say food and beverage costs are higher than expected. The page has no date and no sample size, so give it less weight than the dated recap.

Where Holiday Party Budgets and Survey Numbers Fall Short

Two kinds of gaps matter here: what happens in the room once the budget is spent, and what the surveys can and can’t tell you.

The budget goes to the venue while most guests watch

Many plans put most of the money into a venue, a menu and a bar, then leave the evening to mingling. A few outgoing colleagues work the room, and everyone else stays at their tables or heads out early. None of these surveys measures that outcome, yet it decides whether the night does anything for the team.

Less alcohol means the program has to carry the energy

Challenger’s 2023 survey found nearly 57 percent of companies planned to serve alcohol, down from 63 percent in 2022. With fewer rooms built around an open bar, the program itself has to give people a reason to talk, and it has to work for colleagues who don’t drink.

Rising catering bills squeeze every other line

With 70 percent of planners on the undated pulse page reporting food and beverage costs above expectations, any separate vendor line has to justify itself. Planners need something turnkey that involves the whole room, or it becomes the first line an approver cuts.

Different samples answer different questions

Challenger surveyed 173 HR and business leaders online in November and December 2024. The earlier editions covered 202 U.S. companies in November 2023 and 252 U.S. companies in October and November 2022.

Those answers describe employer plans, formats and spending. They don’t measure how many employees took part, whether colleagues connected or whether anyone valued the night. In your proposal, treat the employer decision and the employee outcome as two separate things.

Meetings forecasts cover more than holiday parties

The 2027 Amex GBT forecast surveyed 500 meetings professionals in eleven countries from August 5 to 14, 2026. It covers meetings and events broadly. Its numbers are expectations, not completed holiday party results.

The dated PULSE recap draws on more than 1,000 event professionals across its September and December survey editions. It adds planning context, but it doesn’t replace holiday-specific employer research. Don’t merge these samples into one workplace benchmark.

Rounding and dates need to stay visible

Releases round history differently. The 2022 edition lists 56.9 percent in-person for 2022, and the 2023 edition rounds the same year to 57 percent. Quote each edition’s figure as written, and keep in-person celebrations separate from celebrations in any format.

The undated pulse page gives no respondent count or fielding dates. The date in our tracker shows when we checked the page, not when planners answered. That gives you a straight answer when an approver asks how current the evidence is.

What NJ, NYC and CT Planners Should Do Next

Start with the outcome you need. A celebration budget and an engaged room are two separate decisions. Before you get into production details, define participation, connection or recognition in terms your approver already uses. Pair these numbers with a clear business case for team building.

Use these statistics to frame the budget. Then check your own headcount, location and schedule. Ask what people will actually do together and who will run the room, because attendance numbers answer neither question.

It’s Playtyme Game Shows runs professionally hosted live game-show experiences built to get the whole room involved. Founder Lisa Lawrence started it in May 2012 after more than 20 years as a choreographer, having noticed that at most events only a handful of people participate while everyone else watches.

For groups of 20 to 300+, a professional host guides every moment while colleagues compete as teams. Formats such as Face-2-Face Feud, a survey-style team format, are already familiar, so the pace stays fast from the first round. The company is based in Teaneck, New Jersey, and serves New Jersey, New York City and Connecticut.

Corporate experiences start at $2,995 for a 60-minute show, and setup, breakdown, delivery and travel within NJ, NYC and CT are included. Treat that figure as a service reference, not a market average drawn from these surveys.

Matching Your Holiday Party Format to Headcount, Venue and Goal

Match the evidence to your group before you sign off on a format. Three questions settle most decisions: how many people will attend, where you will hold the event and what you want people to remember by Monday morning.

If the goal is a room where everyone takes part, a cocktail reception will fill the time slot but won’t get people involved. A hosted game show puts every guest on a team. See how professionally hosted office holiday party experiences work for groups of 20 to 300+.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What percentage of companies host an office holiday party?

Challenger, Gray & Christmas found in its December 2024 survey that 64 percent of companies planned a holiday celebration, the same rate as 2023. Its December 2023 survey put in-person holiday parties at 64.4 percent. The newest verified edition is from 2024, so state the year whenever you quote it.

What do employees actually want at a corporate holiday party?

No survey in this tracker asks employees directly. The closest signal is the Amex GBT 2027 forecast from October 2026, where meetings professionals said attendees want more personalized experiences (35 percent), more social activities and networking (31 percent) and more hands-on, interactive sessions (31 percent). Use that as direction, then confirm it with your own team.

Does higher event spending mean a bigger holiday party budget?

No. A broad meetings spending forecast does not set your organization’s holiday budget. The PULSE findings show costs rising along with budgets, so price your actual scope before you count an increase as extra buying power.

How do you keep a large group engaged at a company holiday party on a tighter budget?

Put part of the budget into a shared activity, not only the venue and menu. Teams and a host who runs the room bring quieter colleagues in alongside the outgoing ones. It’s Playtyme Game Shows hosts live game-show experiences for 20 to 300+ guests, with setup, breakdown, delivery and travel within NJ, NYC and CT included.

How often is this page updated?

Whenever a tracked survey publishes a new edition. Challenger, Gray & Christmas has released its holiday party survey in early to mid December (2022, 2023 and 2024), though no 2025 edition appears on its site, and the Northstar/Cvent PULSE survey runs several times a year. Each change is dated in the update log above.

How should I use these numbers in a budget proposal?

Quote each figure with its source, its edition year and what it measures. Pair the employer data with your own goal, headcount and location. Then show your approver exactly what the budget buys.
